This year, I’m not the PLUG president but I am an officer. Also, this year, the PLUG president has been abroad and completely inactive in PLUG. This has put me in the unique situation of being the only former president in the group. All other officers (vice president, treasuerer) are still the same people as last year which maximizes our combined experience. In a way, this has been the best thing that’s happened to PLUG. No single officer is considered the leader and we all make big decisions together. Also, we know the way that each other officer conducts work so we are able to do independant work without worrying stepping on any toes.
Now that the stage is set, here’s what we’ve done for PLUG this year:
- Instead of getting funds from dues once a semester and then spending all the money we raised that same semester on callout pizza, I suggested and implemented a pot-luck. Members brought food to the event and in return, we had a huge selection of goodies.

- With the money we saved from pizza, I had the idea to buy a domain name, PurdueLUG.org, to match our IRC channel #PurdueLUG on irc.freenode.net (I changed the channel from #pulug to #PurdueLUG last year because I thought it was more descriptive).
- By this time we’d had the spring callout for 2007 and received just enough money to buy a big vinyl banner! This is what I expected to see when I was a freshman and came to my first PLUG meeting. So I went online and uploaded one of my svg designs to a vinyl banner site. It’s amazing what you can buy on the internet.

I’m pretty sure that these are the first non-pizza investments that PLUG’s made for at least 3 years. My goal by doing all of this is that PLUG has a more unified and official front to show off the awesome group that lies underneath!
