Mixed Media

I’ve recently decided to pick up my artistic hobbies again. Over the summer, I bought watercolors, oils, and oil pastels, as well as sketching pencils. I’m particulary fond of abstract art, so I started by copying some of my favorite artists, like Wassily Kandinsky.

For the past month or so, I’ve been trying to come up with my own ideas and create my own artistic style. I have experimented with different mediums. The other day, I started a drawing using only Crayola washable markers and Crayola crayons. By restricting myself to various or odd media, I find myself breaking out of the tradition mold of the art that you learn in school. It forces me to be innovative, which is much more stimulating. The results that I got surprised me, and lead me to think of more ideas.

Last night, I began an oil painting, using only red, black, and white. The painting is based off of a photograph that Luke took of his sister, Jenna, in Argentina this summer. I love it already.

I think that it is extraordinarily important to have some sort of creative hobby of your own, not only to relax, but to be able to uniquely express yourself. Everyone has the potential to do this, but they are unaware of their untapped creativity. Having those hobbies helps define you and gives you an identity. It has helped me to express myself in a way that I was unable to do before.

Sometimes you need someone to help you see the creativity that you possess. Luke helped me find mine.

I plan on keeping an “art diary,” that will include my ideas and the progress that I make.
