My MacBook takes a lot of abuse. I first got it so I could program while I traveled to Argentina and Uruguay. Now I take it everywhere I go including class and late nights at the lab. I basically treat my MacBook like a textbook and, in general, it’s held up pretty well. All except for it’s palmrest. Within a few weeks of having my notebook, the palmrest started getting freakishly discolored and turned a nasty brown. It looked like I’d gone out into the dusty sand dunes to dig a hole and then typed on my notebook. The weirdest part about the discoloration is my hands are generally clean (I hope). I just assumed Buenos Aires had some nasty smog.
A few days ago I noticed my MacBook’s power supply was making weird electrical noises (the sound you’d expect to hear from a loose electrical wire on a cartoon). I went online to try and see if there was a recall and I noticed the discoloration problem was not just with me! My hands are not as dirty as I once thought! It turns out there was a quiet agreement by Apple to replace the porous plastic known as the “top case.” I took my MacBook to the local Apple store and they replaced the top case (which includes the keyboard and track pad) within 24 hours. Not bad. Now my MacBook’s keyboard sounds like the new soft Duo’s keyboard instead of like the woman with long fingernails typing on her computer at the BMV.
Fortunately, there is a website dedicated to finding these defects!
