I saw this video on Gizmodo and it actually made me say “cool” out loud to my computer screen… in my room by myself…
I’m excited about Virgin American Airlines putting Linux on their in-flight entertainment systems on multiple levels. To unwrap this like an onion: on the surface it is just cool to have Linux when you’re on a long flight! Further in, they are going to need Linux developers to work on these applications and systems as well as keeping them updated. And finally to get to the core, the coolest part about all of this, Virgin American Airlines target rich business men. When they see a huge company like Virgin American using Linux it will plant more seeds of the idea to use Linux commercially.
This is just one more place where Windows or some other embedded OS could have been used but instead Linux was used. Yet another small sign that these could be Microsoft’s last days at the top.
