About half a year ago, I got a new Larrivee acoustic guitar. I do a lot of finger picking so I wanted my guitar to be light and delicate sounding. To get this sound, the wood can’t be laminated. A downside to the wood not being laminated is that it’s more susceptible to humidity changes. According to the Larrivee website, if the air gets too humid, the guitar’s frets can squeeze out of the neck because the wood swelled. If there isn’t enough humidity, the guitar can crack because the wood is so dried out. They say 42%-55% relative humidity is the perfect range.
Seeing how precise the web page is about ranges, I got a bit worried. I had no idea how humid it was inside my apartment with the AC on all day, especially being in Texas during the rainy season. A quick Google search told me I needed a hygrometer to measure the humidity. “Great, another 50 bucks down the drain,” I thought. Then I found an awesome glass hygrometer for $3.99 with free shipping! I was skeptical but today I received it and it is very high quality! For $3.99, I suggest that anyone get this hygrometer to take care of their guitar. It’s worth it.
