Dell Internship

Weighing My Options

Almost in response to my previous post about not knowing which path to take after college (higher education or the work force), I was invited for a Dell interview for a summer internship. I was offered a job on the spot and accepted several seconds afterwards to work on Windows Vista Server for Dell. Anyone who knows me knows that this is completely againts my character, to take a job working on Windows, but I basically had two options:

  1. Work with the manager that recruited me (and therefore want’s me on his team) in the Dell Windows division or
  2. Move to the Linux division where I am unknown and have not talked with any of the employees.

I decided I’d like to keep the manager that hired me close while getting used to the situation and then, if I’m offered a job afterwards, I will move to Linux. To be honest, I’m a bit scared to work with Windows. I’ve done very little Windows specific programming and haven’t even touched the system in probably close to five years. It’s most likely, though, in my best interest to diversify a bit anyway.

Program Information

I’ll be working in Austin, Texas for the entire summer. From the website:

  • Travel expenses are re-reimbursed for travel to and from the Dell internship location.
  • Fully furnished corporate apartment with two-bedrooms, two-baths, washers and dryers and housekeeping service every other week. Housing is based on a roommate plan unless a family plan is needed.
  • Paid holidays
  • Interns are eligible for a 10% discount on Dell products
  • Corporate Health Club membership at a discounted rate
  • Intern Executive Speaker Series which includes a Q&A session with Michael Dell.

All of the people who’ve been involved with recruitment have been great and I must admit, the pay is not to shabby either. Hopefully I’ll fit in well and I’ll find a nitch for my love for OS.
