An ongoing problem with ArchLinux has been with the hardware management. I use the latest udev with hotplug functionality. I use hal/dbus and gnome-volume-manager to automount the devices that I plug in. Unfortunately none of these features seem to work. After many bug reports and almost no help at all, I’ve found others with similar problems and it seems to be a pmount error. It was also reported that this bug was fixed a while ago which is apparently not the case.
One prime example of what is going on is this: I got a new digitial camera. I’d like to be able to use the USB cable to move the pictures off my camera without needing a card reader. This works on my laptop (which is running Arch) but not on my desktop. When I plug in my camera, it either starts mounting and unmounting really fast or mounts but has access problems. The access problems are strange. When I browse to the camera via nautilus, it starts to thumbnail the images but then freezes. If I try to copy the images off with cp or nautilus, it freezes. I’ve managed to copy a few off at some points so I tried copying one or two images at a time. This works sometimes along with mounting and unmounting.
Basically Gnome, GVM, Hal/Dbus, and udev… somewhere along the line something or all of these packages have instabilities in Arch that need to be fixed. My friend Bennett is also having similar problems with Gnome.
